Two teams that are undefeated in the league play will face off in the 2020 Mountain West Conference Championship Game when the Boise State Broncos face the San Jose State Spartans. Normally this game would be played on-campus in San Jose, but due to Covid-19 protocols in Santa Clara County, it’s been moved to Sam Boyd Stadium in Las Vegas.

Here are the opening odds for the MAC Championship Game from DraftKings Sportsbook:

How they got here

Boise finished ran undefeated through the MWC season winning all games by eight points or more, with their only loss a 51-17 defeat by BYU on November 6th. The Broncos will have Hank Bachmeier at quarterback, who was injured earlier this season but finished with 929 yards and six passing touchdowns with two interceptions. Andrew Van Buren is the bellcow at running back, with 100 carries for 356 yards and eight touchdowns this season.

It was a magical year for head coach Brent Brennan and the Spartans, who went from 2-11 in in Brennan’s first season of 2017 to a 6-0 2020 so far. The SJSU defense held opponents to a stifling 3.4 yards per play, and quarterback Nick Starkel has finally found a home as a starter after trips to Texas A&M and Arkansas. The transfer is 106/160 for 1453 yards and 13 touchdowns with just four interceptions so far.

Bowl implications

The winner likely ends up in the Las Vegas Bowl, as despite a wonderful undefeated season from the Spartans, their paper-thin strength of schedule will keep them out of the Group of Five spot in the New Year’s Six. The loser will certainly find postseason as well if they choose, possibly in the Arizona Bowl against a MAC team.
