How the public is betting the 2020 MLS Cup Final

The Columbus Crew and Seattle Sounders will square off this weekend in the 2020 MLS Cup Final, with the Crew looking for their second and Seattle looking for their third MLS Cup trophy.

The final game of the 2020 MLS season is here, as Columbus Crew SC will host Seattle Sounders FC in the MLS Cup Final, and a champion will finally be crowned. The Sounders are making their fourth appearance in the last five years, looking for their third ever championship. They won it all in 2016 and 2019, and winning two titles back-to-back would just be the cherry on top of the Brian Schmetzer era. The Crew, who seemed to be inches away from being sold off and moved to Austin only a couple years back, have had a fantastic 2020 season and will be looking for their second ever MLS Cup title, with their first being won in 2008.

Columbus will be without two of their best players as midfielders Darlington Nagbe and Pedro Santos will be forced to miss the game after the Crew reported two new positive tests for Covid-19 earlier this week. This bodes well for the Sounders who have one of the most lethal attacking corps in the entire league made up of players like Raul Ruidiaz, Jordan Morris, Nicolas Lodeiro, Joao Paulo, and Will Bruin.

Betting splits

Columbus Crew (+200): 6% handle, 14% bets
Tie (+215): 1% handle, 3% bets
Seattle Sounders (+143): 92% handle, 82% bets

The public has overwhelmingly sided with the betting odds by picking the Sounders as the favorites to win. Given the news of Santos and Nagbe’s absence, I’d say that’s the right call as the Sounders were already the favorites before realizing that half of the Crew’s starting midfield will be gone. Columbus will put up a good fight, and I doubt Seattle will keep a clean sheet, but I’d expect the Sounders to come out on top in this one and claim their third MLS Cup trophy at MAPFRE Stadium this weekend.
