How and what to watch for No. 9 Georgia vs. Missouri

The No. 9 Bulldogs travel up to Columbia for a rare, mid-December SEC East showdown.

The 2020 regular season is nearing its conclusion for the No. 9 Georgia Bulldogs and while an SEC championship game berth is out of the picture, they’ll try to salvage what they can in these last two weeks and it starts with a trip up to Columbia to take on a game Missouri Tigers squad.

Mizzou came out on top last week in what is surely an SEC Game of the Year candidate, a wild shootout that saw them defeat Arkansas 50-48. Down by one with less than a minute left, quarterback Connor Bazelak led the Tigers down the field to set up a game-winning 32-yard field goal by Harrison Mevis as time expired. This capped off a frenetic fourth-quarter where the Tigers trailed by as many as 14 points at one point.

The story of the win were running backs Larry Rountree III and Tyler Badie, who combined for 264 rushing yards on 22 carries and five touchdowns in the win. With 835 yards on the season, Rountree definitely has a 1,000 yard campaign in his crosshairs.

UGA was sidelined last week with their game against Vanderbilt postponed due to COVID-19. The Bulldogs were last in action two weeks ago in a 45-16 beating of South Carolina, a contest where the Dawgs leaned more on its running back committee than the arm of JT Daniels to get the job done.

The Best Bet

Back to Georgia’s win over South Carolina, their second-ranked defense according to SP+ limited the Gamecocks to just 83 rushing yards on 1.9 yards per carry. The Bulldogs’ bread and butter has been stopping the run, as that was their sixth game this season of holding an opponent to less than 100 rushing yards.

Rountree has been a force for Missouri, but at times has been the entire offense. Expect UGA to key in on slowing him down and make life extremely difficult for Bazelak and company.

Pick: Georgia (-13.5)
