How and what to watch for No. 13 Coastal Carolina vs. Troy

Coastal looks to stay undefeated and move up in the polls even further.

This week the No. 13 Coastal Carolina Chanticleers look to improve to 11-0 as they head to Alabama to face the 5-5 Troy Trojans.

The Chanticleers are one of the best stories in football this year, with last week’s 22-17 win over BYU in a last-minute matchup making for one of the most entertaining games of 2020. Quarterback Grayson McCall has been brilliant for CCU, with 1,832 yards passing via a 67.2 completion percentage with 20 touchdowns and one (1) interception. The modified option offense in Conway averages 6.6 yards per play, while conceding just 5.3 defensively.

The Sun Belt Group B champs will face Louisiana next week in the championship game, and have a chance at the New Year’s Six still, but need to be dominant in their last two games to reach that rarefied air for a #FunBelt team.

Troy is a far more one-dimensional team as the passing game is essentially the entire offense, and they turn it over a bunch: The Trojans average over 388 yards per game, but also have 15 turnovers this season. Quarterback Gunnar Watson has 1881 yards through the air with 15 TD’s and six INT’s in 2020. That gives room for Kimani Vidal (440 yards, 5.5 per carry, two TD’s) to try and add to the total on the ground. Coastal allows 4.2 yards per carry this season.

The Best Bet

The Chants are a terrific story, and they likely deserve the Group of Five spot in the New Year’s Six just for having the flexibility and guts to face No. 8 BYU on three days notice. But the hangover here is real, especially with a conference championship game staring them in the face next week. Coastal wins, but Troy forces them to eat enough clock to keep it close.

Pick: Troy +13.5
