The No. 7 ranked Texas A&M Aggies look build on their 4-1 record Saturday against the scrappy 2-3 South Carolina Gamecocks.
A week ago, Texas A&M quarterback Kellen Mond moved into first place in program history in passing yards. Mond has made steady improvements throughout his time in College Station, and though he doesn’t possess the same ceiling as other SEC signal-callers, he generally makes life difficult for opposing defenses.
Mond gets plenty of help from teammate Isaiah Spiller, the Aggies’ talented sophomore running back. Spiller already has amassed 512 yards and five touchdowns on the ground, putting him on pace to match or eclipse last season’s totals of 946 and 10, respectively. Texas A&M can grind South Carolina away using Spiller’s legs while also building an effective play-action attack off of him.
Meanwhile, the Gamecocks continue to adjust to new starting quarterback Collin Hill. Hill followed offensive coordinator Mike Bobo from Colorado State and has performed adequately, completing 96 of his 156 passes for 1,076 yards. However, he has produced just passing touchdowns against three interceptions, limiting the upside of the aerial attack.
But while Hill’s arm has clear limitations, he has done a decent job converting goal-line opportunities into scores. Already, he has four touchdowns, more than he ran in his previous three seasons combined. If South Carolina gets near the end zone, Hill could add to his already impressive total.
