How and what to watch for UTEP vs. Rice

It’s been a coronavirus struggle for UTEP and Rice this season. Who will get it done on Saturday?

College football: Nov 21 Rice at North Texas

The Rice Owls have been hit just about as hard as any team in college football with coronavirus postponements, and they will host the UTEP Miners on Saturday afternoon.

Rice finally got its season started on Oct. 24, played two weeks and saw two more games postponed. In all, the Owls are now 2-1 coming off a road loss to North Texas last weekend. Rice is a difficult team to handicap since it has only played three games while competing with teams that have had a much more full schedule, but the Owls are ranking in the bottom half in yards per play offensively and defensively. They check in at No. 107 in the latest SP+ rankings.

UTEP certainly hasn’t skated through without cancellations or postponements, but it has gotten seven games in with a 3-4 overall record including 0-3 in Conference USA play. In their last game UTEP was handled fairly easily by UTSA 52-21 to give the Miners their third straight loss. UTEP is struggling offensively, ranking No. 110 in yards per play, thought he defense isn’t a whole lot better at No. 92 in that category.

Rice won the last game in this series 30-16 on the road in 2019.

Rice: (22% of handle, 62% percent of bets)

The Best Bet

We’ve got a case of two pretty bad teams going up against one another so when that happens, I’m more inclined to take the points even if it is on the road. UTEP took last weekend off with a cancellation against UAB, so it will be fresh and ready to play for the first time since Nov. 14.

Pick: UTEP +11.5
