How and what to watch for Ball State vs. Toledo

Ball State and Toledo each have talented, balanced offenses so far in 2020. Will Toledo be able to cover as home underdogs?

The Ball State Cardinals will take their 2-1 record on the road to face another 2-1 team with the Toledo Rockets on Saturday afternoon.

Ball State is coming off a 31-25 victory over Northern Illinois last Wednesday night and is entering with a two-game winning streak. Scoring points has not been an issue for the Cardinals, who have posted at least 31 points in each of their first three games. Ball State ranks 33rd in yards per play offensively and has a fairly balanced attack offensively.

Toledo beat Eastern Michigan 45-28 in its last time out and like Ball State, the Rockets have no issue scoring. The Rockets have scored at least 38 points in each of its first three games, and check in at No. 27 in offensive yards per play with very balanced stats via yards per rushing attempt and yards per pass. These are two evenly matched teams on the offensive side of the ball.

Ball State snapped a five-game losing streak in this series in 2019, winning 52-14 at home.

The Best Bet

Ball State hasn’t changed too much from last season when its offense carried the load for a bad defense. Toledo clearly has the better defense in this matchup, so let’s back the Rockets in this one. As you can tell by looking at the trends, neither team is all that interested in covering spreads, but something has to give in this situation and we’re going to go with the Rockets. I also like this over but have more faith in Toledo covering this number at home.

Pick: Toledo +9.5
