How and what to watch for Bowling Green vs. Ohio

The return of the MAC hasn’t proven fruitful for everyone, namely the Bowling Green Falcons and Ohio Bobcats. The two teams, who have just one win between them this season, will face off Saturday at Peden Stadium.

Few defenses in college football have endured a worse start than Bowling Green this year. Only 12 units in the country have a worse defensive success rate entering the week, though amazingly the Falcons don’t have the worst defense in the conference (Akron, Eastern Michigan, and Ball State all rate worse). Bowling Green has statistically performed best against the pass (97th in success rate), but opponents have simply stuck to their ground attacks to overcome that “hurdle.”

Meanwhile, Ohio has encountered its own issues on offense. The unit hasn’t carved out an identity, with Kurtis Rourke beating out UNLV transfer Armani Rogers for the starting job but doing little else to set himself apart. Rourke has just 323 yards and two touchdowns on the year while lead back De’Montre Tuggle has nearly matched him in yardage (220 yards from scrimmage) and outscored him (three rushing touchdowns).

The Best Bet

Bowling Green does not do anything well right now and cannot stop anyone. But Ohio played a worse defense in their last outing and only managed a 14-point victory. Hold your nose and shield your eyes.
