Wednesday update: The Lions have listed D’Andre Swift as questionable due to his concussion. He did not practice on Monday, but got in limited work on Tuesday and Wednesday, which is a trend in the right direction.
Tuesday update: Swift was listed as limited for Tuesday’s practice. This is a good sign, as he hadn’t practiced since his concussion diagnosis, but he will still need to be cleared by Thursday, which could be tough.
The Detroit Lions did not practice on Monday but if they did D’Andre Swift wouldn’t have been able to participate. The Lions’ Monday injury report estimated that the rookie running back wouldn’t have been able to take the field because of the concussion he suffered against the Washington Football Team in Week 11.
The Lions face the Houston Texans on a short week with a Thanksgiving kickoff. Swift could be in danger of missing a second straight game, so Adrian Peterson and Kerryon Johnson might end up splitting touches in the backfield on Thursday.
Peterson leads Detroit in carries (104) and rushing yards (389) this season but only tallied seven carries for 18 yards in his last outing. Johnson recorded six carries for 17 yards on Sunday but also caught two passes for 21 yards. Johnson has a versatile skill set and played 70 percent of Detroit’s offensive snaps in Week 11, but Peterson is more of a power runner than Swift and could emerge as the top option against a Houston defense that’s given up a league-high 1,593 rushing yards.
