A.J. Dillon tests positive for Covid-19, ruled out for Week 9 TNF

Packers RB A.J. Dillon has tested positive for Covid-19. We break down the implications for a short week.

UPDATE: The Packers announced they have placed Dillon on the Covid-19 injured reserve list.

The Green Bay Packers face the San Francisco 49ers on Thursday Night Football to open Week 9, and it would appear running back A.J. Dillon will be sidelined for the game. Dillon tested positive for Covid-19, according to Tom Pelissero. If the test is confirmed as positive and not a false positive, Dillon would go on the Covid-19 IR list and not be available for the 49ers game.

Dillon served as Jamaal Williams’ backup on Sunday against the Minnesota Vikings. Dillon played 10 snaps and finished with five rushes for 21 yards and one reception for 16 yards. Dillon has seen more work due to Aaron Jones’ calf injury. Jones has missed the past two games after injuring the calf in a Week 7 practice.

Given the short week, it’s unclear if Jones will be able to return from the calf injury. If he is inactive again, Tyler Ervin would likely see more work and the team would potentially promote running back Dexter Williams from the practice squad or sign a free agent.
