Miami Heat PF/C Kelly Olynyk has exercised his player option for the 2020-21 season. His contract will be worth $13.6 million this season with the Heat. Olynyk could have become an unrestricted free agent had he declined the option.
Olynyk signed a four-year, $50 million deal in 2017 with the Heat. He’s been a serviceable role player, mostly off the bench the past three seasons. In those three campaigns, Olynyk averaged 9.9 points and 5.0 rebounds per game. What’s encouraging about Olynyk is he’s coming off his best shooting season in the NBA, hitting 40.6 percent of his attempts from downtown. Olynyk’s ability to stretch the floor at the 5 will help him maintain his spot in Miami’s rotation.
Fantasy outlook for 2020-21
Olynyk isn’t somebody who will get much look in season-long fantasy leagues outside of deeper formats. We saw when the Heat dealt with injuries that Olynyk can enter the starting lineup and step up. He looked really good in the NBA bubble during the restart and was a contrarian DFS play throughout the eight games.
What is encouraging about Olynyk in fantasy is the Heat have a lot of potential for roster turnover. It may mean Miami will add another big to put behind Bam Adebayo, but Olynyk will likely be asked to play a decent amount of minutes off the bench. Remember, the Heat just went to Game 6 of the NBA Finals before losing. The quick turnaround this season means we could see veterans rest. Adebayo injured his neck/shoulder in the finals, so he may not be 100 percent by Dec. 22.
