Report: Sixers sending Josh Richardson to Mavericks for Seth Curry

Philadelphia already unloaded Al Horford’s contract on the Thunder earlier Wednesday. The Sixers are cleaning house with Richardson the latest to go.

The Philadelphia 76ers have traded SG Josh Richardson to the Dallas Mavericks in exchange for a second-round pick and SG Seth Curry, ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski reported during the 2020 NBA Draft. The Sixers got the No. 36 pick in the second round of Wednesday night’s draft as part of the deal. Two picks prior, the Sixers selected Theo Maledon out of France.

This is the big second move the Sixers have made on draft day. Earlier in the day, Philly shipped PF/C Al Horford to the Oklahoma City Thunder along with multiple draft picks for SG Danny Green. So the Sixers have flipped Horford and Richardson into Green, Curry and a draft pick or two.

The big thing with these moves is the contracts. Horford was set to make around $27 million the next three seasons. Richardson has two years left on his deal at $10.8 million in 2020-21 and a player option worth $11.6 million in 2021-22. So the Sixers have shed almost $40 million in salary in the past 6 hours. I wonder what these moves could be for? Hmmmmm.

Obviously the elephant in the room is a potential James Harden trade. Former Rockets GM Daryl Morey is now in charge of the Sixers and the two obviously have a good relationship. Could these be the two big moves that lead to Harden landing in Philly with Ben Simmons and Joel Embiid? It could be.

As for the players involved in this trade, Richardson is an OK two-way guard to put next to Luka Doncic in the backcourt. The Mavericks could also lose Tim Hardaway Jr. if he declines his player option, so Richardson is a natural replacement for THJ as well. Curry is another shooter, something the Sixers have needed for a while. Morey already added a veteran sniper in Green. Curry, when healthy, is a great 3-point shooter.
