The 2020 NBA Draft is set to begin on Wednesday at 7:00 p.m. ET and DraftKings Sportsbook has odds available for where several top prospects will be selected. You can make over under/wagers on the draft position of Anthony Edwards, LaMelo Ball, James Wiseman, and Obi Toppin. Let’s go over how the public is betting.
Anthony Edwards (1.5) — Over (-115), Under (-106)
When college basketball ended Edwards was considered to be the top prospect in the 2020 draft class. However, Ball and Wiseman have gained ground on the Georgia product in recent months. There’s been no indication that the Minnesota Timberwolves are certain about who they’d like to select with the No. 1 pick and the public seems to think that Edwards’ won’t be the first name off the board. Bettors have placed 54 percent of the handle on the incoming rookies over of 1.5 but 53 percent of the total bets are on the under. People have begun to question the incoming rookie’s drive because of a recent ESPN feature and Minnesota already dealt with 2014’s top pick Andrew Wiggins. The over seems like the best bet at this point.
LaMelo Ball (2.5) — Over (+140), Under (-175)
Ball has gained more ground than any of the top three prospects in recent months but bettors seem to think he hasn’t done enough to be a top two pick. Bettors have placed 79 percent of the handle and 82 percent of the total bets on Ball’s over of 2.5. The odds appear to be too enticing to pass up. The Golden State Warriors are unlikely to select the lanky guard with the second-round pick, as they have a serious need for a center and have two All-Star guards at their disposal already. Because of that, the Timberwolves seem like Ball’s only chance to crack the top three. If you bet on Edwards’ over taking the under on Ball as well makes a lot of since.
James Wiseman (2.5) — Over (+126), Under (-155)
Bettors are very sure that Wiseman will be off the board by the time the Charlotte Hornets are on the clock, as 95 percent of the handle and 91 percent of the total bets on his draft position have been placed on the under (2.5). There’s no room for the young big man in Minnesota with Karl-Anthony Towns running the show, so it appears like the public sees Wiseman landing with the Golden State Warriors. Some people have speculated that Golden State could trade back to acquire a battle-tested veteran, but adding a potential superstar center for the future is hard to pass on.
Obi Toppin (4.5) — Over (-250), Under (+200)
Although Toppin was recognized as the best player in college basketball last season, there’s a very small chance the 22-year old will be a top three pick. The Chicago Bulls have the fourth overall pick but might not benefit much from adding Toppin with Lauri Markkanen and Wendell Carter Jr. still in the fold. The Dayton product has been linked to the Cleveland Cavaliers, who have the fifth pick. The public has placed 74 percent and 54 percent of the total bets on the over for Toppin. I think the earliest he’ll come off the board is fifth.
