Drew Brees will go on I.R., keeping him out at least three weeks

Saints QB Drew Brees injured his ribs in Week 10 and will be placed on injured reserve. Taysom Hill appears to be next in line.

Friday update: Brees will go on injured reserve, per Adam Schefter. With news that Taysom Hill will get the start this week against the Falcons, that gives him at least three games he could potentially start moving forward.

Wednesday update: Brees’ second opinion confirmed the multiple fractures and collapsed lung, and he will miss at least a couple weeks. Sean Payton has said he will not announce who will start between Jameis Winston and Taysom Hill.

Tuesday update: Brees is having his scans sent for a second opinion to determine the full scope of his chest injuries, according to Ed Werder. The scan reportedly showed five rib fractures with the possibility of more. As Werder noted, Brees could be looking at a stay on injured reserve.

Update 3:49 p.m.: ESPN’s Dan Graziano is reporting the most optimistic recovery time for Brees is 2-3 weeks and in reality, “there is hope he’s back in time for playoffs.”

Update 2:45 p.m.: Brees is dealing with multiple rib fractures on both sides of his chest and a collapsed lung on the right side, per Ed Werder. His status is uncertain moving forward.

The New Orleans Saints are bracing for quarterback Drew Brees to miss some time with a rib contusion, according to NFL Network. He will get an MRI to determine the extent of the damage.

Brees did not play in the second half of a Week 10 win over the San Francisco 49ers after what he believes were multiple hits leaving him in tremendous discomfort. Jameis Winston replaced him as the starting quarterback and Taysom Hill saw an uptick in work as well. Brees finished the game 8 of 13 for 76 yards and a touchdown. Winston was 6 of 10 for 63 yards. Hill rushed eight times for 45 yards and took a five-yard sack.

Brees was dealing with a shoulder injury heading into the game, with it costing him practice time the past two weeks. Some rest time would help him heal up his shoulder as well.

The Saints face the Atlanta Falcons in a critical NFC South contest. New Orleans is a half game up on Tampa Bay heading into Week 11.
