In the absence of injured quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo, Nick Mullens has taken control of the San Francisco 49ers offense. Though in his last two starts the team has lost handedly and last week the offense failed to even crack 20 points.
From a fantasy perspective, he’s only gotten above 15 fantasy points twice this season in five appearances. This week he’ll face a big challenge, going up against a top half pass defense in the New Orleans Saints.
Fantasy Football analysis: 49ers QB Nick Mullens
Mullens has performed as admirably as any backup quarterback can be expected to perform with the roster he has at his disposal. He’ll be missing Deebo Samuel who is dealing with a hamstring injury and the 49ers could also be missing its top 2 running backs with injuries. Sure, that might mean the game plan will to avoid the ground game with the team’s third and fourth best back in the game, but just because Mullens is passing a lot doesn’t necessarily mean it will be productive.
The Saints pass defense gives up an average of about 230 passing yards per game, though they do tend to allow multiple passing touchdowns each game to opposing quarterbacks. Even against rookies or league-average starters, the passing scores are still there against the Saints.
Still, it’s pretty risky to start Mullens, especially because of all the injuries to his supporting cast.
