The New York Giants will not have starting running back Devonta Freeman when they play the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Monday night football. The Giants announced that the veteran running back is out with an ankle injury that he suffered in Week 7 against the Philadelphia Eagles.
Freeman was signed earlier this season after superstar running back Saquon Barkley suffered a season-ending knee injury in Week 2. In his short time with the Giants, Freeman has 172 rushing yards on 54 carries (3.2 YPC) and a touchdown. Without the 28-year-old running back, New York will have to lean on the tandem of Wayne Gallman and Dion Lewis.
Fantasy Football analysis: Giants RBs Wayne Gallman, Dion Lewis
When Freeman exited last week’s game against the Eagles, Gallman did an admirable job running the football. The former Clemson running back recorded 34 yards on 10 carries and a touchdown. He also had five receptions (five targets) for 20 yards. With that type of production, Gallman scored 11.4 fantasy points.
The 30-year-old Lewis also saw a few carries in last week’s game, producing 23 yards. Thus far, Lewis has not been a factor in the Giants’ offense, and that will probably continue on Monday against Tampa Bay. This season, the Bucs are the best team at stopping the run, giving up only 66 yards per game. They’ve also not allowed a 100-yard rusher yet through seven games. That being said, it is probably not the best idea to start a Giants running back fantasy this week.
