We’re a quarter of the way through the 2020 NFL season and we have a pretty good idea about what teams can contend for a championship and what teams are bound to struggle throughout the year. There have been tons of injuries to key players, and that could make some Week 5 betting lines interesting.
We’ve identified a few games worth keeping an eye on, with odds and betting splits courtesy of DraftKings Sportsbook. We don’t have numbers for Bills-Titans and Broncos-Patriots due to the Covid-19 related issues that could postpone one or both games.
The Miami Dolphins are 1-3 on the year heading into their Week 5 game against the San Francisco 49ers, but they’re not as bad as you think. They lost to the New England Patriots at full strength by 10 points in Week 1 and fell to the Seattle Seahawks by eight points in Week 4. They’re 9-point underdogs against the 49ers, who are set to start Nick Mullens at quarterback. Xavien Howard and Byron Jones are formidable cornerbacks, and I wouldn’t be surprised if Miami loses in a one-score game. Bettors have placed 81% of the handle on point spread bets on the Dolphins.
Another game I have my eye on is the NFC South matchup between the Carolina Panthers and Atlanta Falcons. This game is shaping up to be a shootout, and the over/under for total points is set at 54.5. Only one game has a higher total point over/under in Week 5. Teddy Bridgewater has a ton of speedsters to pick apart Atlanta’s porous secondary, and Matt Ryan has an elite receiving corps capable of picking apart the Panthers’ young defense. Bettors have placed 83% of the money on the over.
The Cleveland Browns are underdogs at +100 in Week 5 and will host the Indianapolis Colts (-114) and I think the home team has a good chance to win this matchup. The Browns have been great against the run this season, and the Colts lean heavily on their running backs. Cleveland has a top-five run defense and Philip Rivers has only thrown four touchdowns in four games. This game could be close because of Indianapolis’ top-notch defense and the absence of Nick Chubb, who has been sidelined with an MCL injury. I trust Cleveland’s rushing attack more than I trust Rivers’ arm. Bettors are backing the Browns and have placed 68% of the handle and 70% of the total bets on the home team.
