The San Francisco 49ers are back at practice to open Week 5, and they got some good news. Quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo is returning to practice in limited fashion, according to head coach Kyle Shanahan.
Garoppolo has missed two straight weeks with a high ankle sprain, getting zero practice ahead of Week 3 or Week 4. Nick Mullens started in his place and had a solid performance against the New York Giants in Week 3, but then struggled in Week 4 against the Philadelphia Eagles and was benched late for C.J. Beathard.
Garoppolo injured his ankle in Week 2 against the New York Jets due in part to the shaky turf at MetLife Stadium. He was looking sharp before the injury, completing 14 of 166 passes for 131 yards and two touchdowns. Most any defense is an oppositional upgrade from the Jets, but getting Garoppolo back would be huge both for the overall team and for the various fantasy weapons on the 49ers offense.
