The Philadelphia Eagles have disappointed as much as any NFL team in 2020, especially on offense. The generally poor performance of the unit has severely limited most of its top weapons, including top tight end Zach Ertz. Whether the Eagles can figure out their issues and rally remains completely unclear as the season reaches the quarter pole.
Fantasy Football analysis: Eagles TE Zach Ertz
While the Eagles entered the season planning to utilize both Ertz and Dallas Goedert in roughly equal measure, the latter’s ankle fracture has simplified the situation. Ertz remains a steady presence at tight end, as his team-leading 15 receptions and18.9% target share attests. His 130 receiving yards trails only Goedert in Philly.
Unfortunately for Ertz fantasy owners, the Eagles draw a San Francisco 49ers defense that has only allowed seven catches for 61 yards and zero touchdowns to tight ends entering Week 4. The 49ers have seen several of their key defensive players go down with injury, but the unit remains capable and will focus on stopping Ertz given Philadelphia’s dearth of healthy and reliable pass catchers. That will put even more pressure on quarterback Carson Wentz who has performed as one of the worst passers in the NFL this season.
Still, that doesn’t mean Ertz shouldn’t start in fantasy this week, especially given the 49ers’ meager opposition through three games. Rather, the matchup probably reduces his upside.
Fantasy Start/Sit Recommendation
Start Ertz in all formats and hope Wentz snaps out of his funk long enough to feed his Pro Bowl tight end.
