The best and worst of this weekend’s Bundesliga schedule

The Bundesliga has a full slate of matches this weekend as they head into week 6 of the 2020-21 season as RB Leipzig still sits at the top of the table after five matches played. Let’s look at the best and worst of the weekend in German football.

Best of Week 6

Borussia Mönchengladbach v. RB Leipzig

RB Leipzig, atop the table after five weeks, will travel to take on 6th-place Borussia Mönchengladbach in hopes of keeping their unbeaten streak alive. Leipzig is one of only three teams in the league who haven’t lost a game yet as they’ve outscored their opponents 12-3 overall, good for 13 points and first place in the table. Gladbach, just 5 points behind them in 6th place, will hope to hand Leipzig their first loss and climb the ranks as they could potentially see themselves as high as 4th place with a win, depending on other results around the league. Gladbach is coming off a near upset in UEFA Champions League play as they almost grabbed all three points against Real Madrid thanks to a brace from Marcus Thuram. In their last league outing, Matthias Ginter sent in a late game-winning goal against Mainz to keep their unbeaten streak alive. Leipzig, on the other hand, is fresh off a 5-0 steamrolling at the hands of Manchester United in UCL action. They’ll look to improve upon that performance as young American Tyler Adams is deemed fit to play again after a knee injury. There are major table implications in this match and it’s one that shouldn’t be missed.

Worst of Week 6

FC Augsburg v. FSV Mainz 05

Mainz is having an incredibly rough season, losing all 5 of their matches thus far, being outscored 15-4 by their opponents throughout that stretch. They’re in dead last with zero points, but only slightly behind other bottom-of-the-table clubs Köln and Schalke. Augsburg on paper should win this match handily, but they’re coming off back-to-back losses to Leipzig and Leverkusen. Despite the pair of defeats, they’ve still had a fantastic start to the season as they sit mid-table in 11th place, with plenty of opportunity to move up. This game will most likely be an easy win for Augsburg, but don’t expect it to be high-scoring. Augsburg has only notched 6 goals on the season while allowing 6 in return, so a 1-0 or 2-0 win will be the most likely outcome.

Week 6 Sleeper

Eintracht Frankfurt v. Werder Bremen

These are two teams who sit mid-table and have plenty on the line as they both try to advance closer to the top. Werder Bremen will make the trip to Frankfurt, riding a 4-game unbeaten streak after losing their opening match to Hertha Berlin. Since that opening week, they’ve taken down both Schalke and Arminia Bielefeld while playing to draws against Freiburg and Hoffenheim. They’ll hope to continue that run of good form and they’ll hope to feature Milot Rashica in their lineup for the first time this season. Rashica has been linked with several clubs outside of the Bundesliga but also came close to a transfer to Bayer Leverkusen which didn’t quite happen. After suffering a knee injury, he could be set to get the nod this weekend as he settles into his current club for the foreseeable future. American striker Josh Sargent should also get the start for Werder as Niclas Fullkrug will be sidelined for a few weeks with a calf injury. Both teams are within shouting distance of a top-four appearance after this weekend should other results around the league go their way.
