The Tulsa Golden Hurricane head into their Friday night home matchup with the East Carolina Pirates with an undefeated conference record, and still a chance at their first league title in the AAC.

TU heads into this matchup with a 2-1 overall record including 2-0 in the AAC. Its lone loss this season came to Oklahoma State, and the Golden Hurricane led that game late in the third quarter. Tulsa blew out USF 42-13 last week, with running back Deneric Prince gaining 109 yards and a pair of touchdowns on 15 carries, and Corey Taylor II also scoring twice with 67 rushing yards on 12 attempts. Quarterback Zach Smith completed 16 of 24 passes for 233 yards with a touchdown and interception.

East Carolina enters with a 1-3 overall record including 1-2 in the AAC. The Pirates are coming off a bye week following a 27-23 home loss to Navy. In that game, the Pirates outgained the Midshipmen, and Rahjai Harris ran wild with 172 yards on 22 carries and one touchdown. Though he lost a pair of fumbles, one occurred on a lateral on the final play. Backup quarterback Mason Garcia completed only 10 of 20 passes for 104 yards, and also rushed for 63 yards and a touchdown on 15 carries. But with Ahlers back, he should return to the sideline for this one.

Tulsa won the last two games of this series including a 49-24 victory in Greenville, North Carolina in 2019.

The Best Bet

ECU starting QB Holton Ahlers is expected to be back this week after dealing with COVID issues, which should help the offense tremendously. Tulsa’s defense is one of the best in the conference, but they struggled with Oklahoma State while dominating the directional Florida schools. ECU might not win with Ahlers back, but they’ll keep it close.

Pick: ECU (-17)
