How and what to watch for No. 19 Virginia Tech vs. Wake Forest

There should be a lot of points scored with two up-tempo offenses in Winston-Salem Saturday.

3-1 Virginia Tech comes into this weekend against 2-2 Wake Forest riding high after a huge win over Boston College. The Deamon Deacons have won two in a row after beating UVA by 17 points.

The Hokies are a team that relies plenty on the run. Through four games they’ve thrown for just 690 yards. On the ground they average over 300 yards per game and have 15 scores too. Wake Forest’s rush defense has been fine, but VT will give them a massive test. Running back Khalil Herbert has been a revelation, with five touchdowns and nearly 600 yards on just 61 carries. The team’s QB Hendon Hooker, has been solid on the ground too, with four scores of his own.

Wake Forest on the other hand is a much more balanced offense. QB Sam Hartman hasn’t had the season everybody expected from him, though he’s still been solid with 893 yards and three touchdowns. They have a two-headed attack out of the backfield, with RBs Kenneth Walker and Christian Beal-Smith leading the way with 383 and 256 yards rushing respectively. Combined, they have 11 touchdowns on the ground. They could be due for big games, as Tech has given up nine rushing scores and averages 5.2 yards per rush allowed.

Both teams are very good at protecting the football. Wake has a +8 turnover margin and the Hokies have +5. Wake has only turned the ball over once all season, VT has given it up just three times.
