Outside of the obvious, must-start guys like Derrick Henry, the running back position can really be hit or miss on a weekly basis. To help navigate some of that uncertainty, here are some suggestions for players to chase and players to avoid in Week 6.
Running Back Starts
Aaron Jones, Green Bay Packers vs. Houston Texans
After a down week against the Buccaneers last Sunday, Jones is primed to come charging back. Houston bleeds points to the league’s best running backs. There was Derrick Henry’s incredible showing last week, and Dalvin Cook, James Conner, Clyde Edwards-Helaire have all found the end zone while running for triple-digit yardage against the Texans.
Ronald Jones, Tampa Bay Buccaneers vs. Las Vegas Raiders
Jones now has three games in a row with more than 100 rushing yards, and he kicked in two touchdowns last week in the Bucs’ thumping of the Packers. The only thing that could throw cold water on his fire is the return of Leonard Fournette, who was practicing in full again this week. Still, head coach Bruce Arians understands the value of a hot hand, and there’s just no excuse for limiting Jones’ work in what should be a runaway win.
Running Back Sits
Frank Gore, New York Jets vs. Buffalo Bills
I don’t know that you should be starting ANY Jets running back in any week, but I’d stay away from Gore this week. Not only are the Jets likely to be buried deep by the second half, the team has said it plans to Lamical Perine more involved in the rushing effort.
Le’Veon Bell, Kansas City Chiefs vs. Denver Broncos
It looks like an exciting pair on paper, the dynamic Chiefs offense with an offensive weapon like Bell, but we still don’t know what exactly his role is going to be or how extensive they’ll use him. Plus, he’s still getting to know the offense, and Clyde Edwards-Helaire is balling out, giving the Chiefs no reason to take reduce his workload.
