JuJu Smith-Schuster looked to be on the cusp of becoming one of the NFL’s truly elite wide receivers in 2018, but has failed to reach the level fantasy owners had hoped since the departure of Antonio Brown.
Smith-Schuster was able to thrive for the Pittsburgh Steelers as a number two option opposite Brown, but has struggled in his own right as Pittsburgh’s number one receiver, even with the return of Big Ben Roethlisberger. JuJu has failed to break the 100-receiving yard mark in 2020, including an abysmal showing against the Philadelphia Eagles last week, catching only four passes for 28 yards and no touchdowns. This week, the Steelers host the division rival Cleveland Browns for a Sunday early kickoff in Week 6.
Fantasy Football analysis: Steelers WRs JuJu Smith-Schuster
What’s the problem with JuJu’s production in 2020? Ultimately it appears to come down to targets. He’s just not seeing enough targets from Ben Roethlisberger to do anything with his limited looks.
Last week against the Eagles, Smith-Schuster received only five targets, while Chase Claypool received a whopping 11. It’s obviously difficult to put up WR1 numbers when the player isn’t receiving WR1-level targets. The Cleveland Browns are allowing the third-most fantasy points to opposing wide receivers in 2020, so the outlook looks promising for Smith-Schuster, he just is going to need to the targets to justify his original ADP.
