Tale of the tape for Thomas Almeida vs. Jonathan Martinez

In a main-card event for UFC Fight Island 6, Thomas Almeida will take on Jonathan Martinez in a featherweight bout live from Fight Island in Abu Dhabi and available on ESPN+.

Almeida enters as the very slight favorite. With a 22-3 MMA record, he has fought just twice in the UFC since 2016 and lost both times. While he’s still 5-3 at the UFC level, the 29-year-old doesn’t have much recent experience.

Averaging 5.66 significant strikes per minute and connecting on 45 percent of them, Almeida is a strike-first fighter and doesn’t do much grappling, with zero takedowns in all eight bouts. Defending 64 percent of his strikes, he’ll want this fight upright.

Martinez is just 3-2 at the UFC level and is 1-1 this year, having fought all five of his bouts since late 2018. 12-3 in his MMA career, he is also a strong striker averaging 4.22 significant strikes, landing 50 percent of his throws while taking just 3.46 and defending 57 percent. He’s a bit more active as a grappler, averaging .64 takedowns per 15 minutes.

Both fighters are aggressive strikers which should result in a fight that will likely not go the distance. As with many of these main card bouts, this one won’t be easy to predict.
