Sekou Doumbouya a must-add after Blake Griffin surgery news drops

Pistons All-Star is out indefinitely, so picking up Dr. Doum on the waiver wire is something you need to prioritize.

Detroit Pistons PF Blake Griffin underwent knee surgery on Tuesday and is out indefinitely. We don’t know if Griffin will be back at all this season, plus the Pistons have been rumored to be looking to move center Andre Drummond before the NBA Trade Deadline. If that’s the case, Sekou Doumbouya is a must-add off the waiver wire in your season-long fantasy basketball league.

Doumbouya has started the past three games for the Pistons with Griffin and Markieff Morris sidelined. He’s played well and has flashed some real upside, particularly on the defensive end. He was tasked with guarding Kawhi Leonard last Thursday in his first start, then Draymond Green next, and finally LeBron James on Sunday night. He’s posted double-doubles in two of three starts and has even contributed a few blocks and steals along the way. His defensive ability should gain the trust of coach Dwane Casey and allow Doumbouya to get additional minutes.

Fantasy Basketball Waiver Wire Advice: Detroit Pistons PF Sekou Doumbouya

Right now, Doumbouya is only 3.9 percent owned on ESPN fantasy basketball. For what it’s worth, I think he’s probably low-owned in most fantasy basketball season-long leagues. His stock is up 3.5% recently and should only rise now that we know Griffin is going to be out. I’d say in deeper formats (12, 14 teams), that Doumbouya is a must-own if you had Griffin. Dr. Doum has double-double upside and should only continue to grow and improve as he gets more playing time. Plus, the Pistons have some easier matchups this week — two games vs. the Cleveland Cavaliers before facing the Chicago Bulls on Saturday.
