Alabama quarterback Tua Tagovailoa announced on Monday that he will enter the 2020 NFL Draft. There was speculation he might return to improve his draft stock, but the quarterback likely sees himself already as a first round pick.
Tagovailoa was expected to compete for the No. 1 overall pick this year, and he was in the thick of it heading into November. However, a dislocated hip in mid-November cost him the rest of his season and likely secured LSU quarterback Joe Burrow’s claim on the top pick.
Reports have been positive about Tagovailoa’s rehab in recent weeks. He went to New York for an update on his medical situation and got all thumbs up, according to Ian Rapoport. The QB has updates in February and March, and the hope is he can get back to football activities later in the spring or early summer.
Even if Tagovailoa were to not play in the 2020 NFL season, he is a strong bet to get selected in the first round of the April draft. But how high might he go? DraftKings Sportsbook posted odds on who will go No. 1 in the 2020 NFL Draft. Burrow is the heavy favorite at -1250. Ohio State edge rusher Chase Young is second at +500, and Tagovailoa is third at +1600. He is followed by Oregon quarterback Justin Herbert (+2500) and Georgia offensive tackle Andrew Thomas (+5000).
It’s worth noting that back in April, Tagovailoa was the favorite to go No. 1 in the 2020 NFL Draft. His odds then were -300, as noted by ESPN’s Ben Fawkes. Injuries will always shake things up when it comes to football.
