Who to play of Russell Wilson vs. Drew Brees in Wild Card DFS

This weekend will be packed with some playoff fantasy football action. Regardless if you play on the four-game main slate or dabble in some Showdown lineups, you’ll likely be facing some of the same questions on who to play. In this piece, we’ll compare using two of the more dynamic names at the quarterback position with Russell Wilson and Drew Brees. We’ll look at their outlook in both formats and the case for using them as a captain in Showdown formats.

Both of these QB’s are in similar matchups during Wild Card Weekend. Wilson ($6,800, $11,600 in Single-Game Showdown) has the luxury of feasting on an Eagles defense that has simply been ravaged all season long. Over the course of the regular season, they allowed an average of 20.8 DKFP and 257 passing yards to opposing quarterbacks. Where the real opportunities come from, however, is opposing receivers. They generated an average of 27.2 DKFP, 175 receiving yards and 21 touchdowns scored. The Seahawks are operating without both Chris Carson and Rashaad Penny and instead are rolling out a group of misfits that include Marshawn Lynch ($5,200, $6,400), Travis Homer ($5,300, $6,800) and Robert Turbin ($3,300, $600). If that generates more pass attempts for Wilson, he could come away with quite the fantasy performance. The Eagles do present a tough pass rush but it’s been an area that he’s succeeded in despite completing 50.8% of his pass attempts. He’s thrown for 10 touchdowns in that scenario and 7.2 YPA. The Eagles tough run defense presents another reason Wilson could be throwing more, which would also make him a very intriguing Captain option in Showdown at $17,400.

As for Brees ($6,600, $11,600), he’s in such a great matchup that it’s hard not to like him over Wilson. The Saints are absolutely rolling offensive and averaged a massive 37.2 points over their last five games. In that span, Brees himself averaged 26.1 DKFP with 16 touchdowns thrown. The Vikings are also a team with a good pass rush but Brees has been well protected all season long, taking just 12 sacks on the year and throwing four interceptions. With someone like Michael Thomas ($9,300, $12,800) at his disposal, this feels like a matchup where the Saints should continue their high scoring ways. Against opposing QB’s the Vikings allowed an average of 19 DKFP and 253 passing yards but like the Eagles, their secondary was the biggest problem. That aspect allowed an average of 24.2 DKFP and 170 receiving yards, which has Thomas licking his chops. With a good offensive lineup up front and the ability to spread the ball around, Brees also makes for an optimal Captain’s pick at $17,400, which will mix up your lineups from the rosters paying the extra $1,800 to captain Thomas at $19,200.

While both quarterbacks will have their way with the opposing secondaries, Brees is by far the superior option. The Saints offense is clicking in every aspect where the Seahawks will have issues running the ball. The offensive line in front of Brees will also make a difference with how well he’s been protected throughout the season. While Wilson is certainly in play in Showdown contests, Brees is in both formats, making him the option to roll out.
