Breaking down Chiefs, 49ers MVP candidates heading into the Super Bowl weekend

We break down MVP betting odds and splits ahead of Super Bowl 54.

The biggest sports betting day of the year is nearly upon us, as the Kansas City Chiefs and San Francisco 49ers will face off in Super Bowl 54 on Sunday. There will be a plethora of bets available on DraftKings Sportsbook, and we’ve got a look at the MVP odds and betting splits ahead of the weekend.

It’s not surprising that Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes is the favorite to take home MVP honors at +115, and Jimmy Garoppolo is just behind him at +225. The top five candidates to take home the award is rounded out by Raheem Mostert (+900), George Kittle (+1600), Tyreek Hill (+2000), and Travis Kelce (+2000). Damien Williams (+2500), and Nick Bosa (+2500) are also in the realm of possibility, but the rest of the field seems like a stretch at this point.

Mahomes has claimed 31% of the handle on MVP bets and 20% of bettors are banking on him winning. There’s a significant margin between him and the rest of the pack when it comes to the percentage of money staked on them. Mostert clocks in at second with a (12%) handle and is followed by Kittle (11%), Kelce (9%), Bosa (8%), and Hill (6%). Garoppolo (5%) and Williams (2%) rank seventh and ninth on the handle percentage list, respectively.

The Chiefs will throw the ball a ton against the 49ers, so Mahomes should have the best chance at putting up big numbers. Garoppolo’s declining throwing numbers have affected his betting value, and Tevin Coleman’s questionable status has made Mostert a hot commodity following his record breaking performance against the Green Bay Packers in the NFC title game. However, bettors remain optimistic that Kittle will have bounce back from his lackluster playoff performance as a pass catcher to steal the show on Sunday. If Mahomes has an off night, the MVP race should be wide open.
