Preseason odds for NFL teams is a good way to look back to see expectations for the season and start to understand where things went wrong or right. Below, we will take a look at DraftKings Sportsbook’s preseason odds for win totals, division titles, player props and more while we discuss what led to their triumphs or disappointments.
Super Bowl: +7500 (nope)
AFC West: +1700 (finished 3rd)
Win Total Over/Under: 6 (actual record 7-9)
Josh Jacobs: Total rushing yards, 900.5 (actual rushing yards, 1,150)
Josh Jacobs: Total rushing touchdowns, 5.5 (actual rushing touchdowns, 7)
Josh Jacobs OROY: +800
Derek Carr: Total passing yards, 4,050.5 (actual passing yards, 4,054 )
There wasn’t much preseason hype for the Raiders going into 2019. After a 4-12 season in 2018, a small uptick to six wins was projected as coach Jon Gruden got his players and philosophy to gel. That philosophy started with getting his offensive line and first-round running back Josh Jacobs going and as you can see from Jacobs’ props, he played above his projections.
The line and run game helped stabilize the Raiders offense and gave them a chance at making the playoffs late in the season, but a poor defense and average quarterback play doomed their chances.
Derek Carr ended up beating his yardage prop by 3.5 yards but put up a pedestrian 21 touchdowns passes to eight interceptions. Those numbers can win with a strong defense, but not when your defense ranks 24th in points allowed.
There is no doubt that Jacobs was one of the best running backs in the league, as he hit 1,150 yards rushing and seven touchdowns while missing some time and playing hurt toward the end of the season. He entered the season well back of Kyler Murray in Offensive Rookie of the Year odds, but surpassed him and should take home the award. However, if the Raiders want to compete for a Super Bowl with Carr at quarterback, they’re going to need to assemble a much better defense and fast.
