Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes and San Francisco 49ers quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo are two very different players, and they’ll go head to head on Sunday in Super Bowl 54. The Chiefs’ offense has been fueled by Mahomes’ arm and dynamic pass catchers, while the 49ers have banked on a consistent ground game through their two playoff games. We’re here to break down which signal caller is the best choice for this weekend’s DFS contests.

Mahomes, the NFL’s reigning MVP, is making plays all over the field in his second year as a starter. He’s thrown for 615 yards and eight touchdowns in two playoff games this year. Garoppolo is closing out his first full season as a starter. While he showed some impressive flashes during the regular season, he’s been quiet in the postseason as the 49ers have leaned on their stout rushing attack.

Fantasy football analysis: Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes, 49ers QB Jimmy Garoppolo

Mahomes has been lighting up opposing defenses while proving he can throw himself out of any deficit. Kansas City was down 24-0 to the Houston Texans, and he responded by throwing for an NFL playoff record four touchdowns in a quarter. Mahomes has tallied 76.2 DKFP in his last two appearances and has thrown at least one touchdown pass in 12 straight contests. His Showdown prices ($18,900/$12,600) are worth it because he easily has the highest ceiling in the game. He can score through high volume passing, and can use his legs as well. He’s led Kansas City in rushing yards in back-to-back weeks.

Garoppolo is bottoming out and failed to reach double-digits in DKFP in both of his playoff games this year. He turned heads by attempting a measly eight passes against the Green Bay Packers in the NFC title game, and tallied 3 DKFP. If San Francisco carries over its offensive approach from the previous round and relies on getting a breakout performance from a running back, a Garoppolo play ($12,000/$8,000) won’t hold much weight. If they have to play catchup or this turns into a passing shootout, he gains value, but does not have nearly the ceiling of Mahomes.

DFS Recommendation

Mahomes is the ideal captain’s pick in this game while Garoppolo should only receive consideration for a flex slot.
