The 2020 Super Bowl is five days away, and by the end of the game, either the Kansas City Chiefs or San Francisco 49ers will be taking home the Lombardi Trophy as Super Bowl 54 champions. When it appears the game is in hand, the winning team will dump Gatorade on their head coach.
At DraftKings Sportsbook, you can bet on the color of the liquid that is poured on the head coach. Over the past 19 years, we’ve had a fairly even split, according to OddsShark. The liquid has been clear four times (four straight years from Super Bowl 39 to 42), orange four times, and no liquid was spotted four times. We’ve seen yellow three times, purple twice, and blue twice.
One color that has never appeared? Red. And yet, this year it is the odds-on favorite. The color odds are as follows.
Red: +150
Orange: +300
Clear/Water: +450
Yellow/Green: +450
Blue: +750
Purple: +1200
None: +1500
DraftKings has been taking bets and provided a rundown of the splits thus far. Yellow/green is getting the majority of bets with 26 percent and half the handle. The next closest in total bets is orange at 19 percent, while the next closest in handle is purple at 14 percent. The favored red is getting 9 percent of the handle and 13 percent of the bets.
Red is favored because we have the Chiefs and 49ers facing off in our first all-red Super Bowl. The 49ers will be wearing their white road jerseys, but both teams have red as their primary home color.
If you think the Chiefs are going to win the Super Bowl, there is even more reason to consider betting on red. Coaches regularly have some kind of beverage at their side when they conduct press conferences. On social media and in going through our photo tool, Andy Reid has regularly had red Gatorade by his side. Considering his nickname is Big Red, it’s not entirely surprising.
This is a tough best to sort out because we don’t know who exactly has final say on this. And yet, if you’re looking for any kind of edge, this might be your best shot.
