Tiger Woods, Rory McIlroy lead the way in King of the Pines contest

The unofficial real start of the PGA Tour season takes place in San Diego this weekend. We break down the King of the Pines contest and some sleepers.

The 2020 PGA Tour season is already underway, but this weekend marks the unofficial start of the season for the big names. The Farmers Insurance Open gets going on Thursday, January 23rd at Torrey Pines in San Diego.

The big names will be on hand, with Tiger Woods, Rory McIlroy, Jon Rahm, Justin Rose, and plenty others making their American 2020 debuts. Woods and others opened their 2020 seasons in a late 2019 Japanese tournament — the ZOZO Championship. Woods won that one, followed by Hideki Matsuyama, and then McIlroy.

DraftKings is back with their King of the Pines daily fantasy golf contest. You earn points based on hole-by-hole performance, streaky play, and final tournament finishes.

The big names will be popular, with Tiger Woods certain to be rostered on as many teams as you can imagine. The key will be figuring out your sleeper options further down the list. Jason Day is an intriguing option, and while he’s $9,000, there’s history on your side. He has 12 career victories, and two of them have come at Torrey Pines. He’s coming off injury and hasn’t won since 2018, but he finished fifth at Torrey Pines a year ago.

If you’re looking for long shots, Henrik Norlander ($6,500) is off to a solid start in the 2020 season. He finished ninth at the Sony Open and fifth at the RSM Classic. He started and finished the Amex brutally, but put up a pair of 66s in the middle rounds. In three appearances at Torrey Pines, he’s missed the cut twice and finished 43rd in 2016. For the price, there’s a lot of value given his performances the past couple months.
