NBA DFS Picks: Top targets at each position on DraftKings for Jan. 2

On a slate filled with studs and injuries, we dive into the top plays for Thursday’s nine-game slate.

Here are the top players to consider at each position for Thursday’s nine-game slate on Draftkings:

Point Guard

Luke Doncic, Dallas Mavericks vs. Brooklyn Nets, ($12,000) — Anytime there is good reason to roster Doncic, I am usually in. Not only is he one of the top fantasy producers on a nightly basis, the Mavs could be without Kristaps Porzingis tonight. If he’s out, Luka figures to have a larger than normal role in the offense. When KP is off the court, Doncic has a 41.2% usage rating and scores 73.49 DKFP per 36 minutes.

Shooting Guard

Lou Williams, Los Angeles Clippers vs. Detroit Pistons ($6,300) — Patrick Beverley is expected to miss weeks with a wrist injury, opening up a big opportunity for Sweet Lou. Ideally, he will move into the starting lineup, a role he’s averaging 43.88 DKFP in, but even coming off the bench, he’s going to need to play increased minutes. In the games Beverley has missed that Lou has been active for, he’s averaging 31.8 minutes compared, a slight uptick from the 30.3 minutes he averages for the season. This might not seem huge, but the addition of a couple extra fantasy points since he scores over a DKFP per minute adds some value to his price tag.

Small Forward

Paul George, Los Angeles Clippers vs. Detroit Pistons ($8,800) — Looking at the numbers, I was surprised to see how much George benefits when Beverley is off the court. His usage rating jumps to 32.2% and he scores 49.64 DKFP per 36 minutes. My guess is that the ball in his hands more often when Los Angeles loses one of its primary playmakers. It’s also nice that PG comes into tonight off a solid game. He had been struggling towards the end of December, but it looks like he busted out of his slump by scoring 57.25 DKFP on New Year’s Eve against the Kings. He picked up a season-high nine assists, which was likely influenced by Beverley being out.

Power Forward

Christian Wood, Detroit Pistons at Los Angeles Clippers ($5,100) — Blake Griffin has officially been downgraded to doubtful for tonight’s game, putting Wood in position to have a monster fantasy outing. In the games Blake has missed, Wood’s minutes have been difficult to predict. For tonight, I think there is a better chance than normal that he thrives with the Pistons shorthanded. Wood is coming off a season-high 28 minutes and it was because he played alongside Andre Drummond for large stretches of the game. Earlier in the year, Detroit was hesitant to play these two bigs together when Griffin was injured.

Domantas Sabonis, Indiana Pacers vs. Denver Nuggets ($8,400) — Malcolm Brogdon has officially been ruled out of tonight’s game because of a back injury, leaving the Pacers without many playmakers on offense. This is going to put more of a burden on Sabonis and he has a 24.7% usage rating with Brogdon off the court this season. Even though the matchup isn’t ideal, Sabonis has been one of the higher floor players in the league this season. He’s scored at least 37 DKFP in 26 of 32 games, making him a safe cash option.
