Giants head coach Joe Judge has found his offensive coordinator. He looked to a divisional rival.

New York Giants head coach Joe Judge has found his offensive coordinator. The Giants will hire former Dallas Cowboys head coach Jason Garrett for the role. Ed Werder was first to report it and Judge made the news official on Friday.

Garrett was the Cowboys head coach for ten years and served as offensive coordinator the four years prior to that. As head coach, he was the play-caller for the early stretch of his career, but he gave up the duties (or had them stripped depending on your point of view) in 2013. He went back and forth with the role, and this past year, OC Kellen Moore called plays for the Cowboys.

Judge was an NFL assistant coach for eight years before moving into this head coach role. He was special teams coordinator in New England from 2015 to 2018, and added wide receivers to his duties in 2019. He was linebackers coach at Birmingham Southern but has never called plays on either side of the ball. Adding Garrett helps in that regard, but also helps in bringing a veteran coach to the mix.

It remains to be seen what this will mean for Daniel Jones, Saquon Barkley, and the rest of the Giants offense. Garrett faced criticism for some of his decision-making, but we know he is comfortable with a work-horse back. We’ll see if that bodes well for Barkley.
