Editor’s update: Tevin Coleman is expected to miss “several games” due to an ankle injury suffered in Week 1. 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan announced Coleman had a high ankle sprain and the team would see how he is week-to-week. Matt Breida will start in his place in Week 2 against the Cincinnati Bengals, and Raheem Mostert will be the primary backup. In Week 1, Breida had 37 rushing yards on 15 carries and Mostert had 40 rushing yards on nine carries.
The San Francisco 49ers face the Cincinnati Bengals in Week 2, and running back Tevin Coleman is looking like a question mark for the game. Coleman suffered an ankle injury midway through the 49ers Week 1 win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and was quickly ruled out for the remainder of the game. In Sunday’s game, Breida led the team with 15 carries for 37 yards, while Moster had 40 yards on nine carries. Coleman finished with 23 yards on six carries.
After the game, Coleman left the locker room in a walking boot. The team is traveling to Youngstown, Ohio to spend the week before they face the Bengals, and Coleman will undergo an MRI at that point. Head coach Kyle Shanahan did not offer specifics in his postgame press conference, but did hint that Coleman might miss some time with the injury.
Matt Breida is Coleman’s backup, with Raheem Mostert the third string back. If Coleman’s injury will be of the multi-week variety, the team would promote Jeff Wilson from the practice squad.
Fantasy impact: The 49ers got off to a poor start on the ground, averaging 3.2 yards per carry between the three running backs. The Bengals held the Seahawks to 2.88 yards per carry. They did rank 26th in run defense DVOA last season, so it remains to be seen what Week 2 might bring. If Coleman does not play, Breida is worth a flex option. If Coleman plays, Breida loses considerable value for the time being. A Shanahan offense can offer a lot of rushing options, but you’ll need to wait to see some consistency before committing to anybody but the lead back.
