After an ugly Super Bowl letdown, the Rams kick off their 2019 campaign with a trip to Carolina. The Panthers got off to a 6-2 start in 2018, but then an injury to Cam Newton began a downward spiral and they finished just 7-9.
This matchup looks like an offensive showcase, especially with Newton back and healthy. Even with his ongoing shoulder injury, Newton maintained an 11-game streak in which he threw for multiple touchdowns per game. The Panthers’ talented cadre of young skill players — Christian McCaffrey, D.J. Moore and Curtis Samuel — still are improving as they enter just their second or third seasons. The Rams had the second-most potent offense in the league last season, both by yards and scoring. The Panthers’ defense was decidedly average, and while they made considerable efforts to strengthen their linebacker group this offseason, they barely addressed the rest of their defensive issues. The Rams bring back all of their primary offensive contributors from last season, including their leading rusher and their top eight pass-catchers.
