The Bills and Jets kick off the season with an important early test. While few analysts are optimistic about either teams’ outlook this season, both see themselves as potential playoff teams. Sharing a division with the Patriots, these teams already are facing an uphill battle, and they know they can’t squander this chance to jump ahead of a key rival.

It’s likely to be a matchup of contrasting styles. The Bills were sixth in rushing attempts last season, and they are led by second-year QB Josh Allen, who was fourth among QBs in carries. New Jets coach Adam Gase’s old team, the Dolphins, were in the bottom 10 in run plays — though that was partly because they also ranked near the bottom of the league in total offensive snaps. Those Dolphins operated at the second-slowest pace in 2018.

Both starting QBs — the Jets’ Sam Darnold is also in his second year — were somewhat turnover prone during their rookie campaigns. Between the likelihood of turnovers and potentially slow paces of play, this could turn into a low-scoring war of attrition.
