Dwayne Haskins the odds-on favorite to lead Washington QBs in 2019 regular season starts

Odds closed once Case Keenum was named starter. Look for Haskins to get some work and finish with more starts than Colt McCoy.

Washington heads into the 2019 season in a quasi-rebuilding process after Alex Smith suffered a 2018 leg injury that could potentially end his career. While he continues to push back, Washington drafted hopeful long-term answer Dwayne Haskins in the first round of the 2019 NFL Draft.

Haskins was the third quarterback selected in the first round, behind Kyler Murray and Daniel Jones. Murray is locked in as the Arizona Cardinals’ starter, while Daniel Jones is behind Eli Manning in New York.

Haskins joined a Washington depth chart that included Case Keenum and Colt McCoy. Haskins might be the guy of the future, but Keenum claimed the starting job for Week 1. McCoy is still rehabbing a leg injury, leaving Haskins as the No. 2 quarterback on the depth chart.

Odds are pretty good that Haskins will get some playing time before the end of the 2019 regular season, and DraftKings Sportsbook offered odds on whether or not he will end up getting the most starts of this group. Haskins was the front-runner to have more starts, with -200 odds. Keenum followed at +200, and McCoy brings up the rear at +1200.

The odds came down after Keenum was named the starter, but it is still worth considering how the QB depth chart might shake out this season. Haskins is the future of the organization, but there are a lot of question marks on the offensive side of the ball. Trent Williams continues his holdout, although there are rumors he could be back for Week 2. Even if Washington wanted to move Haskins into the starting lineup sooner rather than later, I’d hope they would wait for their franchise offensive tackle to return.

Keenum has the clear edge as the starter, but given how bad this Washington team could be, Haskins could get a shot to start sooner rather than later. Keenum was the better value when odds closed given he was on track to claim the starting job. I suspenct Keenum ends up with the slight edge in total starts, but I doubt we see Haskins go the entire season not starting a game. He’ll end up with more starts than Colt McCoy barring some kind of injury shaking up the depth chart.
