The 2019 college football season has wrapped up September, and we’re a little over one-third of the way through the regular season. Plenty will change over the next two monthsw, but the traditional powers are settled in for the time being. Alabama, Clemson, and Georgia are in the top three spots, with some combination of Ohio State, Oklahoma, and LSU in the next three spots.
It is no surprise then how the Heisman Trophy odds at DraftKings Sportsbook are shaking out at this early juncture. Several of these names will slip at some point, but for the time being, we have a growing split among the favorites.
Alabama quarterback Tua Tagovailoa has been the favorite for some time now and is showing no signs of slowing down. He put together a monster performance against Ole Miss this past weekend, throwing for 418 yards and six touchdowns, while adding a rushing touchdown. The performance saw his Heisman odds improve from +250 to +200.
Of course, he’s entering the more difficult stretch of his schedule, starting after the upcoming bye when Alabama travels to face currently No. 25 Texas A&M. That game, home against LSU in early November, and the Iron Bowl against Auburn later that month will likely make or break his Heisman campaign.
Oklahoma quarterback Jalen Hurts is right behind him at +300. A year ago, another Oklahoma quarterback — Kyler Murray — came up from behind with a monster season to claim the Heisman over Tagovailoa. It’s fitting that we get a pair of Alabama standouts atop the odds. If Tagovailoa stumbles even a little bit, Hurts could still leapfrog him.
Ohio State quarterback Justin Fields was the big gainer this week, improving from +700 to +500 on the back of a thumping of Nebraska. He threw for 212 yards and three touchdowns while rushing for 72 yards and another touchdown. He takes a step up in competition this weekend when the Buckeyes host a ranked Michigan State squad.
