The 4 best QBs to claim off the Week 1 waiver wire

You’ve held your fantasy draft, and with just days remaining before Week 1 kicks off, you’re not exactly feeling your roster. That fourth WR and third RB weren’t what you hoping for when the draft began. Well, there’s no time like the present to fix your mistakes. Let’s look at the top quarterbacks still available in more than 30 percent of leagues, based on season-long ownership in CBS Sports leagues as of Sunday, Sept. 1.

Jimmy Garoppolo, San Francisco 49ers (68 percent owned)

Jimmy G was the savior in San Francisco before his knee injury destroyed dreams by the Bay. But he’s back and looked like his old self in the 49ers’ third preseason game, completing 14 of 20 passes for 188 yards and a touchdown. George Kittle is there. Marquise Goodwin is there. Keep the name Deebo Samuels in the back of your mind. There’s every reason to think the Garoppolo the 49ers traded for is still alive and throwing.

Sam Darnold, New York Jets (43 pct)

His rookie season behind him, Darnold enters a huddle that looks considerably more potent than the ones he commanded last season. Le’Veon Bell gives Darnold arguably the best pass-catching running back in the league. And with Jamison Crowder joining Robby Anderson at wide receiver, Darnold has a plethora of legit playmakers to throw to. Darnold’s talent is indisputable, and now he has the tools he needs to fulfill his promise. He should not be available in over 50 percent of leagues. Go get him.

Nick Foles, Jacksonville Jaguars (31 pct)

As the Eagles know to their great delight, Foles is a guy who knows how to get it done. He now gets the keys to the car in Jacksonville, and with a top-flight defense and breakout potential in wide receiver Dede Westbrook, Foles should keep his good times rolling. Compared to Blake Bortles, Foles is going to look like Johnny Unitas to fans in Jacksonville. For fantasy owners, he’s a guy who should put up respectable numbers on the regular.

Jacoby Brissett, Indianapolis Colts (20 pct)

Just because he isn’t Andrew Luck doesn’t mean he can’t play the position. Brissett is in much better position to succeed in his second stint as Colts starter. He struggled in 2017 because he was acquired by the team right at the start of the regular season and was essentially flying blind. Now he’s had two offseasons under Frank Reich and was the No. 1 in camp this season with Luck sidelined. He still has legit weapons, including T.Y. Hilton, and if he can avoid mistakes, there’s no reason he can’t put up double-figure points each week. He’s an emergency streamer, and maybe more if things break right.
