The Carolina Panthers have to face their second straight opponent with Cam Newton starting at quarterback. The team announced at the beginning of Week 4 that Newton would not be playing due to a Lisfranc injury, and Kyle Allen will start in his place.
Newton injured his foot in the preseason, but tried to tough it out and acknowledged he was playing injured in a video released Friday evening. He aggravated the injury in Week 2, and at this point there is no timeline for his return.
Fantasy impact: Allen had a monster start last week against Arizona, throwing for 261 yards and four touchdowns in a 38-20 of the Cardinals. He had some solid numbers in a couple opportunities last season, but this still caught most of us off-guard.
This week, he faces a Houston Texans defense that is struggling against the pass. Losing Jadeveon Clowney and Tyrann Mathieu, among others, has resulted in a defense that is giving up the sixth most fantasy points to quarterbacks. Allen is not a must-start at this point, but if he puts together a strong road performance, he becomes an intriguing option on the waiver wire.
As for his pass catchers, I would still keep expectations a little lower, but they showed last week they can be incredibly productive even without Newton.
