Though he has yet to be officially ruled out, Damien Williams did not take part in a single practice this week for the Chiefs, likely meaning the running back will once again be sitting on the bench in Week 4. So, while that obviously translates into fantasy viability for LeSean McCoy, it could mean another contest where Darrel Williams is a factor. In fact, while it was the veteran that found his way into the end zone for Kansas City on two different occasions against Baltimore, it was Williams who played more offensive snaps (37) and garnered more touches (14) in Andy Reid’s explosive offense.
The lesson here is simple. Anyone becomes a tantalizing fantasy asset when given a role in the Chiefs’ high-scoring machine of an offensive system. Kansas City sits third in the NFL in points per game (33.7), second in the AFC in red zone trips per game (4.0), and second in the entire league in yards gained per game (487.0). You no longer have to think of Williams and McCoy as themselves. They’ve transcended that. Think “Tecmo Super Bowl” on the NES, as they are now just Chiefs RB - an archetype that is never in a bad matchup. Although, it obviously doesn’t hurt when Williams averages 7.8 yards per touch, either.
Fantasy Impact: We’ve gone this long without even mentioning that Kansas City is playing Detroit this weekend, which is another credit to how fantastic the Chiefs truly are. Still, I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention that the Lions have hemorrhaged points to opposing backfields so far in 2019. Mostly the damage has been done through the air, with no NFC team having surrendered more receiving yards per game to RBs (67.7) or receiving yards per target (8.8) to the position. Williams and McCoy can both put up numbers this weekend.
