How to handle Tevin Coleman in Week 3 fantasy football

Just how long is the 49ers running back going to be on the shelf, and how does this change the fantasy outlook?

The 49ers haven’t seen much of Tevin Coleman in the regular season thus far. He left the team’s Week 1 win over the Buccaneers with what turned out to be a high ankle sprain, and hasn’t seen the field since.

High ankle sprains are tricky injuries, especially for skill position players. It can require as much as six weeks for a player to recover enough to suit up again, and even then, it can still mean they’re less than 100 percent. However, things seem to be trending in the right direction for the Niners’ backup running back. He got his walking boot off this week, which means he can start rehab. There’s still no indication for how much time he’ll miss, however. San Francisco has a bye after this week’s game, so keep an eye on his status ahead of Week 5 when they host the Browns.

The 49ers don’t really have a No. 1 running back, i.e. a guy who gets the lion’s share of the carries. It’s hard to say just how many Coleman will take when he does return to the lineup.

Fantasy impact: This is an offense with two productive running backs, so far. Matt Breida has a slight edge on the leaderboard for total carries and rushing yards, but Raheem Mostert is right up there. Breida had 121 yards on 12 carries last week. Mostert had 83 yards on 13 carries, as well as rushing touchdown. And to make it all that much more frustrating for fantasy owners, Jeff Wilson scored twice as a goal-line back last week.
