How to handle Mike Williams injury in Week 2 fantasy football

The Chargers receiver’s status is up in the air. Here’s what that means for your fantasy lineups.

Editor’s update: The Chargers wide receiver is a game-time decision, according to multiple reports. Ian Rapoport reported Williams will test out his knee in pre-game work, and if the risk is minimal, “he could play.” Adam Schefter reported Williams improved as the week went on and “is likely to be used Sunday in red-zone situations.”

It’s mid-September which can only mean one thing in the NFL — the Los Angeles Chargers injury report is crowded. The same week that the team lost tight end, Hunter Henry, it’s also unclear about the status of wide receiver Mike Williams.

He hurt his knee late in last week’s game against the Indianapolis Colts and was forced to leave before the final whistle blew. He missed practice both Wednesday and Thursday, but he was able to return, in a limited role, on Friday. Williams will be a game-time decision this week.

Head coach Anthony Lynn was concerned enough about Williams’ status this week that the team signed an extra receiver off the street.

Williams was a boom-or-bust player last season, mixing in some big games with duds, but he did finish the season with 10 receiving touchdowns and a rushing score. It was enough that the Chargers were expecting big things from the third-year receiver.

Fantasy Impact: If Williams does play, there’s a chance he could be less effective than usual. If he’s out, look for Travis Benjamin and Austin Ekeler to get more looks in the passing game. Against a woeful Detroit defense, Philip Rivers and the Chargers skill position players could be in for a nice day.
