How to handle Tevin Coleman injury in Week 2 fantasy football

The 49ers will be without their second running back this week.

The San Francisco 49ers will be without running back Tevin Coleman this week for a road game against the Cincinnati Bengals. In fact, they might not have him for a few games after he suffered a high ankle sprain in last week’s game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Coleman hurt his ankle on the first play of the game last week. Despite trying to play through it, he finally had to leave at the half. He finished the game with 56 total yards, 23 on the ground and 33 in the air.

High ankle sprains are tricky injuries, the kind that tend to linger. Fortunately for Coleman, the Niners seem intent on making sure he doesn’t get back into action before his leg has healed. Head coach Kyle Shanahan said this week that the plan was to bring Coleman back after the team’s bye in Week 4, which means he may only miss this week’s game and next week’s tilt against the Pittsburgh Steelers.

San Francisco signed Coleman to a two-year, $10 million contract during the offseason. He was coming off a career year with the Falcons in 2018, when he rushed for 800 yards and four touchdowns. He started the season with the 49ers as the backup to Matt Breida.

Fantasy Impact: Coleman is obviously a non-factor this week, but keep an eye on Breida’s performance while he’s out. The 49ers offense never really got things going in Week 1, and Breida only rushed for 37 yards. He should be better this week, but if he can’t produce over the next two games, Coleman could see a bigger role once he returns.
