There is so, so much to unpack about Jamison Crowder’s Week 1 performance against the Bills. Off the top, the veteran wideout became the first man in NFL history to record at least 14 catches and not break 100 yards receiving. These are the types of things that can happen when a player produces an aDOT of just 2.07 yards on 15 targets - the lowest average depth of target for any of the 51 WRs with more than three catches this past Sunday. Additionally, none of Crowder’s opportunities came in high-leverage situations, with Le’Veon Bell the lone Jets’ player to garner a target inside the opponent’s 10 yard-line. Part of that can be attributed to Crowder’s archetype, but much more can be blamed upon New York’s feeble offensive effort; something that’s unlikely to change heading into its second contest.
After coming down with a case of mononucleosis, Jets QB Sam Darnold will not be starting Week 2’s tilt versus the Browns. Instead, former Broncos’ pivot Trevor Siemian will get the nod. This is a troubling turn of events. For as much as Darnold’s struggled during his time in the NFL, at least he seemed to have a rapport with Crowder. Conversely, it’s unknown which receiving option Siemien might favor. However, what is set in stone is the seventh-round pick’s past. In 2017, his most recent go-around as a starting quarterback, Siemien produced a microscopic 5.4 adjusted yards per attempt across 11 games of work. The only three qualified QBs to fall short of that underwhelming mark? Joe Flacco, Brett Hundley and DeShone Kizer. Not exactly company that inspires optimism.
Fantasy Impact: With Quincy Enunwa out for the season and Chris Herndon suspended, Crowder is the clear safety valve in New York’s passing attack. In a contest in which they’ll likely be trailing, there’s some value in that role. Still, unless you’re in a full-point PPR format, I’d have to suggest steering clear of Crowder. It’s difficult to imagine his path to relevance without being heavily rewarded for his empty volume.
