At this point the biggest question we should be asking about Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Jameis Winston is whether or not he’ll get benched. Another game like last week’s three-interception effort against the San Francisco 49ers and the Bucs might not have a choice.
Two of this three picks last week were returned for touchdowns. The Bucs are lucky he managed to avoid a five-interception day when the 49ers dropped one and let another bounce off a defender’s hands. He fumbled the ball twice too, but Tampa Bay was at least able to recover those.
Head coach Bruce Arians gave him a break speaking the press after the game, saying two of the interceptions were not Winston’s fault. That might also be a savvy coach who isn’t ready to throw the quarterback under the bus, at least not publicly, not yet anyway.
By now, these kinds of games have become an all too common feature for Winston. He threw 14 picks in 11 games last year, and multi-interception games have been a regular feature since he was the first overall pick in 2015. He’s had 16 of them. Winston’s play could be a real problem for a coach like Arians who likes to throw the ball and take his shots.
Fantasy Impact: A short week doesn’t give Winston or the Bucs much time to iron things out before Thursday’s game at Carolina. Avoid him at all costs.
