Cam Newton threw the ball to D.J. Moore 10 times in the Carolina Panthers’ Week 1 loss to the Los Angeles Rams. And while Moore had one fumble and didn’t find the end zone or break off any big plays in that game, his performance is a good sign for fantasy owners that he’s going to be a big part of the Panthers offense this season.
Those 10 targets last Sunday were more than Moore had in a single game last year. The best part is that he managed to catch seven of those passes for a total of 76 yards. Things started so well for him last week. His first catch of the day was a 13-yarder on the opening drive. On the very next play, he had an 11-yard gain erased when a defender punched the ball out of his hand while fighting for extra yards. It happens. Not that it makes it any more digestible for your fantasy team, not to mention the Panthers and their fans.
One turnover isn’t enough for him to lose his spot as the team’s top wide receiver. However, even with that spot on the depth chart, Moore still is unlikely to finish the year as the Panthers leader in targets and receptions. That honor will most likely go to do-it-all offensive weapon Christian McCaffrey. But smart defenses will work to make life extremely difficult for McCaffrey, which should open up more opportunities for Moore.
Fantasy Impact: Moore has the chance to put together a better game at home against the Buccaneers. With aging tight end Greg Olsen listed as questionable with a back injury, there could be more targets to go around for Moore.
