The Kansas City Chiefs are not expected to have running back Damien Williams available in Week 15, according to NFL Network reporter Ian Rapoport. Williams was limited in practice on Wednesday and Thursday, but a Friday downgrade to DNP suggests he might not be able to play on Sunday. Rapoport is hearing Williams will be inactive.
If Williams does not play, LeSean McCoy, Darwin Thompson, and Spencer Ware would split the workload. Last week, McCoy led the group with 11 rushes and one reception on three targets. Thompson was next in total touches with four rushes and four receptions on five targets. The recently re-signed Ware brought up the rear with five rushes and one reception on two targets.
None of the group was effective against a stout Patriots defense. McCoy and Thompson each had 43 total yards, while Ware ended up with -2 thanks to a big loss on a reception.
Fantasy football analysis: Chiefs running backs
If you can avoid this unit entirely, you will be better off. The Broncos have given up the 12th fewest points to the running back position. It’s not as good a defense as the Patriots, but it’s solid enough to create problems for this trio.
If you absolutely have to have one of them, McCoy is looking like the better starting option. Thompson took on the bulk of the Week 13 role when Darrel Williams got hurt, but McCoy was the starter last week. However, given McCoy did not exactly get much going, I don’t think anybody would be surprised if the backfield equation changed to some degree. Ware has a week under his belt, so we could very well see his workload increase.
I would rank them McCoy then Thompson then Ware, but ideally you stay away from this situation entirely.
